Everything You Need to Know About College Football 26

EA Sports just dropped the cover and trailer revealing gameplay, modes, and more.

There was a point in pop culture history where EA Sports’ College Football was just a memory — a beautiful, controller-throwing, dynasty-building fever dream that disappeared in 2013 thanks to a lawsuit and the NCAA’s allergic reaction to paying athletes. But after a decade in the wilderness (and some much-needed NIL reform), the game returned with a vengeance last year. Now, EA Sports is back for its sophomore season, and College Football 26 is already looking like a five-star recruit.

This year’s edition features two breakout wide receiver phenoms on the cover, a deluxe version with everybody and their mascot saying “cheese,” and all the upgrades and game day vibes you can cram into a console. Let’s get into everything we know so far.

College Football 26: Trailer, Features, Game Modes

If you felt the ground rumble in late April, don’t worry — it wasn’t a minor earthquake. That was just the internet reacting to the first College Football 26 announcement trailer, which dropped April 24 during NFL Draft coverage like it was trying to beat the draft picks to the punch. While that teaser gave fans a tasty little appetizer, the main course is coming in hot: the official trailer landed on May 29, and it’s about to make football fanatics lock in with their gaming consoles for weeks.

With a dramatic voiceover fit for the next action blockbuster and Metallica’s “Enter the Sandman” playing in the background, teams like Clemson and Texas are seen doing their pre-game traditions, and real-life coaches like Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman and Ohio State’s Ryan Day make an appearance.

Of course, it wouldn’t be college football without the rivalries. Adding to the trailer’s realism, it features Oregon vs. Oregon State and USC vs. UCLA, with cover stars Ryan Williams and Jeremiah Smith catching touchdown passes in rivalry matchups. Hats from different schools are also featured on the table, referencing the high school feature that will be available in the game.

EA Sports says CFB 26 will have over 2,700 new plays, 10,000 players, and coaching styles from over 300 real-world coaches for the most “authentic college football experience yet.”

Other features include:

  • Home Field Advantage 2.0 with enhanced Stadium Pulse meter effects for away teams
  • A new trophy room in Dynasty mode to display player accolades
  • Updated recruiting with location-based visits and a deeper transfer portal system
  • Road to Glory returns with 10 new player archetypes
  • Improved tackling animations and revamped hit stick mechanics for more realistic gameplay

Game modes include:

  • Dynasty: A coaching simulation mode with full control over recruiting, playbooks, and custom teams—now featuring Dynamic Dealbreakers and Team Builder support
  • Road to Glory: A career mode starting in high school, where players build a highlight reel to earn college offers and work their way up to becoming a starter
  • Road to the College Football Playoff: A ranked online mode where players compete for wins to qualify for a playoff bracket and the National Championship
  • College Football Ultimate Team: A team-building mode featuring a mix of current players and college legends in online multiplayer competition

College Football 26: Release Date, Price, Platforms

EA Sports announced that CFB 26 officially goes live on July 10 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you’re impatient and not price sensitive, you can get it three days early by preordering the MVP Bundle for $149.99, which gives you deluxe versions of College Football 26 and Madden NFL 26 (officially dropping on August 14th on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2).

It’s not a bad deal considering both games are $99.99 each. Also, all the editions of the game are “eligible for EA’s loyalty offer, meaning that owners of last year’s titles get discounts and extra goodies for their purchase.” Users will also have access to the usual trial period at launch at no extra cost.

For those looking to play on the Switch 2, you can’t secure College Football 26 through the EA website. However, Amazon is taking pre-orders for the game-key card “physical” copy of the game.

College Football 26: Cover Stars

EA Sports dropped the cover for College Football 26 on May 27, featuring two of the biggest stars in college football. Alabama’s Ryan Williams and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith are the faces featured on the standard game cover.

This is a vibe shift from last year, when EA had three cover stars instead of a duo — Texas QB Quinn Ewers, Colorado’s two-way chaos agent Travis Hunter, and Michigan RB Donovan Edwards. There is also no defensive player in sight, which is the usual trend for the game’s official cover. Before Hunter posted up, “Brian Orakpo was the last defensive player to appear on the cover, as he was featured on the PlayStation 2 edition of NCAA Football 10.”

Also, EA didn’t just stop at one version. Nope, they hit us with the deluxe edition cover too, and it’s crowded in the best way: we’re talking former cover stars Reggie Bush, Tim Tebow, Denard Robinson, a couple mascots, and big dogs like Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin.

The cover reveal made waves and rightfully so—these players earned their spot. Ryan Williams pulled off circus catches in real life like he had cheat codes installed. Spinning touchdowns? One-handed grabs? Georgia fans still haven’t recovered. The man had 865 receiving yards and 8 receiving TDs as a freshman. Wild.

Then there’s Jeremiah Smith, who just casually lit up Oregon in the College Football Playoff like it was a high school scrimmage. 187 yards and two touchdowns in a single game? Disrespectful. By the time the season ended, he had 1,315 receiving yards and 15 receiving touchdowns. Basically, he played like his controller was set to “God Mode.”

When College Football 25 finally dropped last year, it wasn’t just a return. It was a resurrection. One where athletes actually got paid, fans got the nostalgia hit they’d been begging for, and EA got to say, “We’re back, baby.” Now with College Football 26 coming in hot, the sequel era is in full swing.
