On Thursday, May 22, Kid Cudi took the stand in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal sex trafficking and racketeering trial—and what he said grabbed headlines fast. In sworn testimony, Cudi alleged that Combs broke into his home, tampered with security cameras, and may have been connected to a 2012 car explosion that destroyed his Porsche.
His courtroom arrival caught just as much attention. He pulled up in a leather jacket, jeans, and a cigarette—looking like the cover of a moody alt-rap album, perfectly matched with New York’s gloomy skies. Naturally, the internet had some thoughts. Some said it was unnecessarily hard. Others called it aura farming. Either way, his presence was loud.
Afterwards, Young Thug posted on X, “Dam cudi a rat lol,” but experts reviewing the trial said that Cudi’s testimony didn’t directly prove Combs or any of his associates were directly involved in the arson incident, which is key for the prosecution. Find out more below.
Kid Cudi Testifies Diddy Broke Into His Home and Tampered With Security
Cudi testified that in late 2011, after Combs found out he was dating Cassie Ventura, the mood turned hostile. According to Ventura, Combs had discovered the relationship during a “Freak Off” and became enraged, lunging at her. She then called Cudi in a panic, and they left for a nearby hotel.
Later that morning, the two learned that Combs and an associate had entered Cudi’s home. When Cudi returned, his security cameras were repositioned, opened gifts were scattered around, and his dog was locked in the bathroom. He called the police and filed a report.
Kid Cudi Recalls Porsche Explosion and Confrontation With Diddy at Soho House
A month later, in January 2012, Cudi’s dog sitter called to inform him that his Porsche was on fire in his driveway. In court, Cudi said it looked like the top of his car was cut open and a Molotov cocktail was thrown in. When asked what his reaction was to finding out his car was on fire, he said, “What the fuck.”
Cudi testified that he later arranged a meeting with Combs at the Soho House in LA, believing Combs was behind the fire. When he got there, “Sean Combs was standing there, staring out the window with his hands behind his back, like a Marvel supervillain,” Cudi recalled, prompting laughs from several jurors and courtroom spectators.
When asked about the Porsche, Combs allegedly replied, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Though Cudi said he believed Combs was lying, the two later crossed paths again in 2015—also at Soho House—and Combs apologized. “He said, ‘I’m just sorry for all that bullshit.’ I was surprised, so I found peace with it,” Cudi testified.
Kid Cudi Cross-Examined: Doubts Raised About Diddy and Cassie
Under cross-examination, Cudi acknowledged that DNA was collected from the car but never yielded results, and no charges were filed. CNN legal expert, Misty Marris, said the defense did some damage by casting doubt on “claims that Combs and his co-conspirators were involved in the car fire.” Cudi testified that he believed it to be Combs because he’d heard of his violent behavior from Ventura, but he never saw who blew up his car.
When asked if Cassie “played him,” Cudi answered, “Yes.” He explained that the relationship ended because “the drama became too much” and that he feared for both their safety due to Combs’ violent behavior.
