The latest musician to turn everything she touches into social media gold, a protege of Lil Nas X, and the talk of big-name musicians like Selena Gomez and Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat has been rocking the music world since 2018.
Read on to find out who Doja Cat is and maybe give her a listen. You never know. Her latest single could be your daily jam!
Who is Doja Cat?
Doja is a Jewish-American musician on a mission to make rap more vibrant. Her real name is Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini. Doja knew a little bit about fame even before she herself became famous. Her dad is a South African actor who starred in Sarafina! and The Lion King on Broadway. Her mom is the artist Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer. 2
Doja was born in Tarzana, California and moved between the east and west coast while growing up. She grew up with a dance background in ballet, jazz and tap. At age eleven, Doja was break dancing and danced in a crew that competed in battles around Los Angeles. Also, why she was break dancing, she and her mother were also living in an ashram and practicing Hinduism. 2
Doja’s mom and dad ended up separating and in an interview, Doja said her dad comments on her social media posts which she finds weird, but says she doesn’t hold a grudge against him and it’s fine. 4
As a teen, before she became enveloped in the music world, Doja did makeup tutorials and created Youtube videos. At age 17, Doja dropped out of high school to pursue music. In the beginning, it was more to hang out with friends than to actually make music but eventually, she got into platforms like Garageband and began making beats and writing songs that ended up on Instagram and SoundCloud.
Now, Doja sings, raps, and makes visually appealing music videos that are hard to look away from. Her music videos and lyrics are full of sexual innuendos. She has performed half-naked, or less, on her social media platforms.
She acknowledges the fact that her music and lyrics are very “tongue in cheek” and sexually driven.
The stage name Doja Cat came about because of her relationship with weed and weed culture when she first started her music career and her obsession with cats. Hence, the cat ears and other cat-related accessories she can be seen sporting. She also tried to imitate the Japanese culture early on in her career.
Social Media Vibe
Doja grew her fan base very early by using social media. She’s known for collaborating music-making sessions with her followers and hilarious internet antics. 2
“So High” was one of her first tracks to hit SoundCloud in 2013. Doja says her musical influences are D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Lil Kim, Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, and Jamiroquai. She would practice her different musical talents while at home.
Her latest single “Say So” is popular on Youtube and inspired a TikTok craze. She became a viral internet sensation after releasing her song “Moooo!” The song was accompanied by a homemade music video in which Doja shoved french fries up her nose and rapped “B**ch, I’m a cow” and drank a milkshake dressed in cow print.
Haley Sharpe, an enthusiastic TikToker, choreographed a dance to Doja’s “Say So” and uploaded it to TikTok. It was so popular, more people started doing their own dance moves to the song and uploading them to TikTok. Doja paid homage to the viral dance craze when she made the actual video for “Say So” and invited Haley to dance in it.
Doja even got a few backup dancers and danced Sharpe’s choreographed dance on “The Late Show With Jimmy Fallon”.
Doja currently has 2.5 million viewers to interact with her social media pages on a regular basis. Doja goes live and on Instagram and improvises songs for fun. Some of her improvised music includes getting strep throat, animals, or anything else that she’s got going on that day or a particular moment.
Say What?!
Doja Cat is known to say anything that comes to mind. We can tell this by some of the vulgar lyrics in some of her songs.
In 2018, Doja tweeted a derogatory remark towards the LGTBQ community as she was describing Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator. She immediately responded with an apology, of sorts, saying that she uses the word frequently and doesn’t think that anyone should assume that she’s being mean or unkind. She later confessed that she used the term out of ignorance and doesn’t want anyone to see her as a role model per se. She really just wants people to get joy out of her music.
The fact that she even made these derogatory remarks is strange because Doja admits that she has relationships with both men and women. Her first known relationship was with Johnny Utah, who is an Indie artist. The two met online when Doja Cat watched his music video for “Honey Pie” and made a weird comment about his dance moves and his pants. Johnny Utah was quoted saying that Doja hated the song while Doja swears she was attracted to his style.
The couple became an official couple when Johnny told Doja that he had shown a picture of the two of them to his little cousin and told him that they were together.
“Don’t make me look like a liar now. He looks up to me.” 6
Their love fizzled out after several issues, one being Doja making racist comments on social media.
The Music
Doja has been catching the eyes, and ears, of big-name musicians as well as Twitter and Instagram fans. Singer Ariana Grande said that she and Doja have created a track together, but there is currently no release date for it. Grande also says, “I love her so much; I love her personality, I love what she brings to the table musically.”

Lyrics
Let’s talk a little bit about the over the top, sometimes extreme, lyrics Doja Cat has come up with.
Candy:
I can be your sugar when you’re fiendin’ for that sweet spot
Put me in your mouth, baby, and eat it ’til your teeth rot
I can be your cherry, apple, pecan, or your key lime
Baby I got everything and so much more than she’s got
And it’s such a typical thing
Running over a billion men
Running through a difficult place
You don’t need no blood on your hands, no
She’s just like candy, she’s so sweet
But you know that it ain’t real cherry, know that it ain’t real cherry
She’s just like candy, she’s so sweet
But you know that it ain’t real, know that it ain’t real
She’s just like candy, she’s so sweet
But you know that it ain’t real cherry, know that it ain’t real cherry
She’s just like candy, she’s so sweet
But you know that it ain’t real, know that it ain’t real
Juicy:
He like the Doja with the cat, yeah (cat, cat, cat)
He like it thick, he like it fat, yeah (fat, fat, fat)
Like to keep him wantin’ more
He ask me “Doja, where you at, huh?” (“Doja, where you at, huh?”)
And all the n—as wanna know
How long it take to pull my pants up
Broke a fingernail and then some
Trynna squeeze into my True Religion denim
Celibate don’t want a cellulite (I don’t want your cellulite)
I don’t buy it, where the cellulite? (yeah, where that, where that at?)
He said the body unbelievable
Can’t trust a big butt and a Gemini-i-i-i
I keep it juicy, juicy, I eat that lunch (yeah)
She keep that booty, booty, she keep that plump (yeah, yeah)
That natural beauty, beauty, yeah, yeah
If you could see it from the front
Wait ’til you see it from the back
Back, back, back, back (wait ’til you see it from the)
Back, back, yeah, back, back, back (wait ’til you see it from the)
Back, back, back, back, back (wait ’til you see it from the)
If you could see it from the front, wait ’til you see it from the back
