When it comes to the most anticipated hip hop albums, it is an interesting topic. Rappers and their proclaimed release dates have a bad track record of not aligning. For some artists, their projects even get delayed years!
In 2019, there definitely was no shortage of music; however, there were several artists whose fan bases were expecting them to drop an album that never came. But there’s hope! Some of these same artists, plus a ton more, are expected to have their projects see the light of day in 2020.
Some of the artists you’ll see in this list seemingly drop an album every year and others give their projects time to breathe and let their fan base miss them before blessing them with another project.
Here is a list of some of the most anticipated hip hop albums expected to release in 2020:
Lil Wayne – Funeral
Despite Lil Wayne being notorious for announcing his albums and having them delayed or never releasing, the world can expect Funeral to come 2020. The release of Funeral will make this the veteran rapper’s 13th solo studio album. Given the title, many questions are surrounding the rapper, wondering if this might be his last project.
Kendrick Lamar – TBD
Kendrick Lamar left his fans drooling for more after his last album, Damn. However, this is not uncharacteristic for him. The dedicated artists takes time crafting each album, while at the same time, keeping the rumblings to a minimum about when it can be expected to release. This being said, Kendrick is booked for massive headline events this Summer which is a good indicator that music is on the way.
J. Cole – The Fall Off
Straying away from his last few methods of dropping surprise albums, the MC himself announced over a year and half ago that this album can be expected soon. With the album supposedly being from the prospective of J. Cole’s alter ego kiLL edward, the concept is highly anticipated. During a show in Vegas, a satirical presidential ad was shown with the words “The Fall Off 2020.” Following his success working on Revenge of the Dreamers III, much can be expected from J. Cole on this next project.
Drake – TBD
Drake himself mentioned that he has been working on a new album and with the rap superstar having not dropped an album in 2019, it is a safe assumption that it is coming soon! He mentioned the album would feature both rapping and singing.
Future – TBD
In his words, “I absolutely have to make another #hndrxx album,” he told his Instagram following. This could prelude to an album with similar sounds that only the man Future can give us. The album was expected to release in February but was pushed back. It is safe to say that we will see its release in 2020.
Megan Thee Stallion – Suga
With having not dropped a full-length studio debut album, the ground-shaking freshman’s project should hit the streets this year. A good sign of things to come is the album’s first official single being released last week titled “B.I.T.C.H.” Can this 2019 XXL Freshman claim 2020 with this release?
Lil Baby – My Turn
Lil Baby blossomed as an artist in 2018 with his debut album Harder Than Ever, which left fans anxiously awaiting his every drop in 2019. In February, he announced that his second album titled My Turn will be coming soon. With hit singles already circulating on streaming platforms, there’s is undoubtedly reason to look forward to this project.
Young Thug – Punk
After dropping arguably one of the best albums of the year in 2019, he wasted no time introducing that he has another album on the way titled Punk. He announced himself that the album is due in 2020 and that his fans can expect a more introspective dive into his life as Thugger. Expected to release February, 2020.
Vince Staples – TBD
For almost a decade, Vince Staples has pleased his fans by dropping an album consecutively every year. Except in 2019. This leaves room to believe that the Long Beach rapper has something brewing under his new deal with Motown Records. Look forward to his album announcement soon.
Migos – Culture III
The Migos discography is extremely vast and they plan to add to it by releasing a sequel to their successful album Culture II. Since this last join album, the trio of Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff have released their solo albums but plan to get together again and drop what has been revealed to possibly be their last last collaborative album.
Big Sean – TBD
After great commercial success, dropping 2 full length albums in 2018, the Detroit rapper canceled his momentous touring to focus on his music. He later revealed trials and tribulations he was dealing with were regarding his mental health. While fans were praying that Big Sean was alright, he drops 2 singles “Overtime” and “Single Again” that showed that he truly has been honing his craft. Keep an eye out for his newest album in the coming months.
Ski Mask the Slump God – TBD
His latest album, Stokeley, dropped with a host of gold selling and one platinum selling records. But that was over a year ago. From interviews to Instagram Live sessions, there has been multiple mentions of a project to come.
Playboi Carti – Whole Lotta Red
If you are a fan of Playboi Carti, then you already know the drama behind this album and you have been patiently waiting. Playboi Carti, developed a cult following in the last few years and they want Whole Lotta Red. 2020 should be the home of his long awaited release. With several leaks and countless drama on when this project will drop, could this be one of the most anticipated hip hop albums of 2020?
Kid Cudi – Entergalactic
Cudi has been battling issued with mental health and took time to himself. And for that reason, we have no seen a solo album from the G.O.O.D. Music artist. He is set to drop his eighth studio LP along with an animated music series to go along with the album. With Kid Cudi’s undeniable creativity and ability to make his fans feel, this should be an experience to look forward to in 2020.
Yo Gotti – Untrapped
Yo Gotti is a veteran rapper who has nothing to prove with almost 20 years of music under his belt. However, the artist still has more to give. Following an emotional Instagram post, Yo Gotti announced that this album would reveal his sentiments towards feeling trapped by his past and will be absent of political correctness. This album is set to drop within days!
A Boggie Wit Da Hoodie – Artist 2.0
After his album was pushed back to perfect the melodic sounds he holds in high regard, Artist 2.0 is set to release around Valentine’s day. This album will feature his collaboration song with Lil Uzi Vert “Reply.”
Kanye West – Jesus Is King 2
Expectations for this album are intriguing the say the least. Kanye has announced that Dr. Dre would also be collaborating with him on the creation of Jesus Is King 2. The two’s strikingly different styles combined to create create a work of art that will surely please both fan bases.
Lil Uzi Vert – Eternal Atake
After label feuds and album delays, 2020 may actually be the year that Eternal Atake surfaces. If his latest single “Futsal Shuffle 2020” is any indicator of how the album will sounds, fans should expect a wild infusion of hip hop with electronic dance music.
Joyner Lucas – ADHD
The conceptual album tacking the hard topic of mental disorders and ADHD is set to drop this year. Joyner Lucas has been grabbing listeners ears and eyes through his consistent stream of conceptual music and music videos that have inspired discussion and even earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video with “I’m Not Racist.” In many people’s eyes, with Joyner being without a studio album, the results of this project could be sink or swim for the talented MC! For this reason alone, it could easily be one of the most highly anticipated hip hop albums of 2020.
Juice WRLD – TBD
As earlier revealed, Juice WRLD has an archive of 2000 songs that have yet to surface even after the rapper’s tragic death. Set to cover how the young artist has tackled the new pressures of becoming a rap superstar, leaked songs seem to indicate that elements of rock and roll will be involved in his posthumous album. With a strong family and team behind the keeping of his music, surely they will do his legacy justice upon its release.
