Do you want a better academic understanding of the Toronto Hip Hop/R&B scene that Drake and The Weeknd helped establish and from which they arose? Are you fascinated with the cultural and musical impact that these artists had on society as a whole? Then the course titled RTA 950: Deconstructing Drake and The Weeknd at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada may be something that you should consider!
The course, created by instructor Dalton Higgins, is the “Selected Topic in Media” for the 2022 school year. Higgins is a “prolific writer, podcaster and hip-hop scholar,” according to HipHopDX.
On Instagram Higgins asked, “Why Drake and The Weeknd…?”
“It’s time to get our Canadian rap and R&B icons recognized and canonized academically or otherwise. And it is CRITICAL for scholars, historians, to examine the Toronto music scene that birthed Drake/Weeknd and helped create the conditions for them to become mega successful,” the instructor answered.
With this course, Drake and The Weeknd join other elite rap and R&B stars who have been studied at a higher level.
