Welcome to the first edition of RapTV’s Power Rankings – we’ll be following artists closely and ranking them based on growth across album/single success, quality of music, streams, and hype.
This month is highlighted with some of the biggest names in hiphop making their highly anticipated returns and some artists that are newer to the game that have been leaving their marks. It will be interesting to see how this list shapes up as the summer months heat up with new albums and singles that will become the anthems of a post-covid hiphop scene. Along with festival season approaching, the hype around some of these artists will be higher than ever. Without further ado, here are the hottest artists from the month of May.
There’s no doubt that J. Cole is at the top of his game right now. ‘The Off-Season ‘’ has been one of the most anticipated drops in recent years, and it is now the best-selling release of the year. This is J. Cole’s 6th consecutive project to debut at #1.
#2 - Drake (-)
Drake has had the industry on edge since he first teased Certified Lover Boy in late 2019. He has managed to maintain that spotlight through his precise timing with singles & features to hold us over. Drake also recently was honored as Artist of the Decade at the Billboard Music Awards.
#3 - Lil Baby (-)
One of the hottest artists of the past year, Lil Baby has solidified himself in the game and has managed to maintain the momentum with his consistent output. Baby was recently nominated for nearly every BBMA award possible and showed out on his record with J. Cole, “Pride is the Devil.”
#4 - Nicki Minaj (-)
Nicki Minaj has returned. After a brief hiatus she brought in over 80k with a mixtape she put out over a decade ago with “Beam Me Up Scotty." Seeing Green was a nice surprise addition to the mixtape providing listeners with one of the hottest singles of the year.
#5 - Young Thug (-)
Young Thug is one of the most consistent artists in the game. He continues to unlock potential as an artist and brings out the best in others, which is more than evident across the entirety of Slime Language 2. Riding the success of this album, it’ll be interesting to see what comes next.
#6 - Rod Wave (-)
Rod Wave has been long overdue his roses, it is obvious summer 2021 will be a huge moment in his career considering the success of his most recent release “SoulFly.” Rod Wave brought in over 130k first week with this critically acclaimed project and landed his first #1 album.
#7 Polo G (-)
After dominating the Billboard charts with “Rapstar,” the hype around Polo G is real. He just announced his third studio album “Hall of Fame” will be dropping next month and released "Gang Gang" with legend Lil Wayne. If you’re sleeping on Polo you will have no choice but to see him topping the charts again.
#8 - Lil Wayne (-)
Trying to comprehend the work ethic of Lil Wayne is not an easy task to take on. This legend is still putting out quality 30 years into his career and his most recent features on both Polo G and Nicki Minaj singles have received overwhelming positive reception.
#9 - Moneybagg Yo (-)
Moneybagg Yo has been spending a lot of time across the top of the charts as of recent. Following the release of “A Gangsta’s Pain” it is clear that Moneybagg will continue this trend of dropping trap hits.
#10 - Travis Scott (-)
The man of hype himself. Travis Scott is one of the most hardworking in the game, and it’s paying off. He just recently sold out Astrofest, and has all eyes on him as Utopia approaches. His most recent appearance with Baby Keem shows he’s continuing to take his sound to new heights.
