Who is Gunna?
From Atlanta, Georgia rap super-star Sergio Giavanni Kitchens best known as Gunna, often referred to as Wunna, or Slime has been dominating the rap game since he came in. With hit singles like “Drip Too Hard” with Lil Baby and “Hot” with Young Thug, Gunna has raised the bar for all future Atlanta artists with his unique, melodic, and vocal deliveries. Here’s everything you need to know about Gunna.
Born in College Park Atlanta, GA Gunna kick-started his rap career with his feature on Young Thugs “Floyd Mayweather” single back in 2016. Since the feature early on in his career, Gunna has been working hard, dropping mixtapes frequently. The founding father of the term “Drip” Gunna started a new wave of the southern sound and quickly rose to success with his “Drip Season 3” mixtape.
Rise to fame:
The following year in 2019 Gunna made his debut album “Drip or Drown 2” which gained him tremendous attention in the rap game earning an RIAA Gold Certificate selling over 500,000 thousand copies, with singles like “Big Shot” which was featured in EA Sports NBA 2K19 and a total of four RIAA Gold Certificate singles on the same project.
Gunna became a household name and there was no doubt he was on his way to the top spot. Countless amounts of artists have collaborated with Gunna and featured him on their singles and albums from Travis Scott, Drake, and NAV, many of which have earned platinum and gold certificates.
Gunna’s style is unique, what separates him from the rest of the competition is his wavy flow, which appears to be suitable for almost any type of beat, his melodies and mumble delivery which have been proven to draw attention based on the amount features Gunna has been found on. Rappers cannot wait to collaborate with Gunna as it nearly guarantees a hit track.
In May of 2020, Gunna had released his second debut album called “WUNNA” which peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. The album had incredible features ranging from names such as Future, Lil Baby, Young Thug, Travis Scott to name a few. The album is projected to sell over 1,000,000 copies, currently selling over 500,000 and it’s safe to say we will be hearing a lot more from the drip god in the near future.
Lifestyle:
Gunna’s career is looking as bright as his ice. Aside from his musical talents, Gunna is notorious for his expensive taste. He constantly mentions in his music his love for expensive jewelry, high-end fashion clothing, and luxurious, fast cars. Gunna is no stranger to big spendings purchasing a Lamborghini Urus earlier this year, a 2020 Corvette, Maybach S600, and a Rolls Royce Truck which was gifted to him by his friend Young Thug on his birthday of June 14.
The 27-year-old rapper has no problem splurging on his family and friends, buying a multi-million dollar mansion for his mother, a number of exotic cars for his friends, and vacations to exclusive islands for him, his friends, and his family to celebrate his accomplishments.
Gunna has been featured on many occasions to talk about his love for clothing and jewelry from interviews to podcasts and magazines. Some of his favorite brands include Gucci, Richard Mille, Balenciaga, Maison Margiela, and Louis Vuitton. He even went as far as to name a song from his “Drip or Drop 2” album calling it “Richard Millie Plaine” in reference to the high-end Swiss watch brand, which ultimately led to a massive increase in popularity for the watch company.
This is one of many trends Gunna has started, from clothing to vocabulary, the term “Drip” as he created is often mentioned by many other rappers in their songs and daily life.
The lyrics of his music truly relate to his lifestyle as Gunna speaks on current and past events of his life. He enjoys participating in the use of drugs often referring to the drugs he likes such as Weed, Xanax, Codeine and Adderal having even named a song off “WUNNA” called “Addy” as a short form for Adderal. Gunna can often be seen on social media drinking Codeine and smoking Weed. His money-making and spending habits are also a major part of his lyrics, often elaborating on the prices of his clothing and jewelry.
Artist Affiliation and Record Labels:
Since the start of Gunna’s career, he has been affiliated with major Atlanta talent most notably Young Thug. The founding father of YSL Records (Young Stoner Life Records) had been the very first to reach out to Gunna and help him kick-start his career. The two have been friends since early on in both of their lives. Having such a strong friendship it was only right for Gunna to sign with Young Thugs record label as opposed to any major ones.
Unlike how most record labels work they take a percentage of their artists record sales, Young Thug has not taken a single dollar from Gunna’s earrings. Their relationship goes beyond the dollar sign and their deadly duo on the mic has truly made them a classic hit-making machine that benefits both parties personally and financially. No greed just “SLATT” meaning Slime Love All The Time. Their slogan is a representation of their relationship and it translates to their success together as rap stars.
However, Gunna does have a distribution deal in place with 300 Entertainment. This applies to all YSL artists including Young Thug. 300 Ent is the primary source for Gunna’s music distribution. Some features include music release strategy, distribution strategy, content creation, creative suggestions, data, and digital collection. It appears that Gunna has benefited tremendously with this deal, allowing him to mostly focus on his music and money while 300 takes care of the distribution.
What’s next for Gunna?
It’s clear that Gunna has done a lot in a short period of time. From multiple gold plaques to sold-out tours, countless amounts of features and interviews, Gunna is always in heating up mode. What comes next, with “WUNNA” out now it looks like the focus on increasing the sales for the album pushing close to platinum right now and pumping out more music videos for the top leading singles.
We have heard rumors in the industry that Lil Baby and Gunna are also in the works to drop “Drip Harder 2” their second collaboration album together. His most recent feature can be found on Internet Money’s single “Lemonade” featuring Don Toliver and NAV.
The Drip God is constantly snippeting new sounds in the studio on his social media with producers like Turbo and Wheezy. Based on the historical evidence it appears like we will be seeing more of Gunna Wunna sooner than we might think. We know the Gunna, Thug, and Baby all have a strong relationship together, so don’t be surprised if we see the 3 headed snake collaborate on a trio album. Until then Gunna can be spotted in Los Angeles in one of his many exotic cars, or with his Slatt crew going on shopping sprees casually on a Monday afternoon. More of Gunna to come in 2020.
