Is Harry Styles Gay
Singer and actor Harry Styles, the British performer who first made a massive name for himself as one of the fab five members of the boy bad One Direction between 2010-2016 has had np trouble getting a lady on his arm to date. At times it seems like there is just as much focus placed on his dating life as there is in his music.
At one time or another, Harry Styles has been romantically linked to Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Emily Atack, Nicole Scherzinger, Nadine Leopold, Pandora Lennard, Tess Ward, and Camille Rowe just to name a few.
But even with all of this feminine attention coming his way, there has still been plenty of speculation that Styles may be having same-sex romantic proclivities as well. Is Harry Styles gay? Why do people tend to make these assumptions, and what does Harry Styles himself have to say about his sexual orientation?
Back in the Days
Harry Styles’ sexuality didn’t just start getting questioned recently. The speculation was happening even when he was a member of the mega pop group One Direction. Harry addressed this sort of gossip in 2013 in British GQ when there were wild rumors circulating that he was dating TV and radio host Nick Grimshaw:
“Bisexual? Me? I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure I’m not.”
Then just a year later the rumors ramped up some more after Harry Styles made an appearance on “On Demand Entertainment” with One Direction member Liam Payne. When they were asked about their favorite traits in a woman, Payne’s answer was: “Female, that’s a good trait.” But Styles’ answer was quite different:
“Not that important.”
Then in 2015, Harry Styles’ guy-on-guy rumors continued, this time regarding him and another member of One Direction. ‘Larry Stylinson’ became the couple name given to One Direction’s Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.
There were Tumblr social media accounts dedicated to their supposed relationship. People wrote detailed erotic fan fiction about them and fans of this couple even referred to themselves as Larries, compiling pictures and messages as a collective form of proof about Harry and Louis’ love affair.
It started when the group was all living together and this idea continued to swell in people’s curiosity, with people going as hard as to assume that the girls that they were dating were just ‘beards,’ women to make Harry and Louis appear heterosexual to their fans.
Harry Styles on Miley Cyrus’ Pansexual Identification
Pansexuality defined as being is sexual, romantic or emotional attraction towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity. This is exactly how the massively famous entertainer decided to self-identify herself. Harry Styles celebrated Miley’s proclamation:
“Being in a creative field, it’s important to be progressive,” he said. “People doing stuff like that is great…Everyone should just be who they want to be. It’s tough to justify somebody having to answer to someone else about stuff like that…I don’t feel like it’s something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself.”
Harry’s Flamboyant Flare for Fashion
In One Direction, Harry Styles’ dressed like a typical teenaged boy, hoodies, tee-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. But Harry Styles the solo artist carves out a much more flamboyant image with unconventional clothing.
As a co-host at the Met Gala he stepped out in a sheer blouse and a pearl earring. In regard to who should be allowed to wear which item of clothing Harry Styles’ response was:
“What women wear. What men wear. For me it’s not a question of that. If I see a nice shirt and get told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay? Doesn’t make me want to wear it less though.’ I think the moment you feel more comfortable with yourself, it all becomes a lot easier.”
There’s a perception that Harry Styles is gay or in fact, bisexual. When asked if his gender-blurring fashion choices make this into a question about his own sexuality Harry says:
“Um. I guess I haaaaave been asked? But, I dunno. Why?…Yeah, I think I do mean that. It’s not like I’m sitting on an answer, and protecting it, and holding it back. It’s not a case of: I’m not telling you cos I don’t want to tell you. It’s not: ooh this is mine and it’s not yours…It’s: who cares? Does that make sense? It’s just: who cares?”
When asked if he is purposely provoking people to think he is gay for attention Harry Styles responds with:
“Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No.” As for the rest, in terms of how I wanna dress, and what the album sleeve’s gonna be, I tend to make decisions in terms of collaborators I want to work with. I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool. And more than that, I dunno, I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun. Honestly? I can’t say I’ve given it any more thought than that.”
The Sexuality Rumors Continue
When it is all said and done, Harry Styles hasn’t officially identified himself as gay and he hasn’t labeled himself as bisexual either. He has tried to keep the nosey information-overdosing audience out of his personal life as much as possible, trying to hold onto any piece of his privacy that he possibly can.
Has he openly dated men in front of the media? The answer at the moment seems to be no. Maybe the question isn’t, is Harry Styles gay? Maybe the more appropriate question is why do people care if Harry Styles is gay or not?
His super fans don’t seem to be making any ultimatums that if Harry dates men then they will stop listening to his music. In fact, there may be way more people that want him to identify as gay or bisexual so badly. They seem to already be building their own story around every piece of traditionally feminine item of clothing that Harry Styles ever wears.
