Although Jay-Z has been a superstar in the rap and pop music genres for decades, he definitely reached an elevated status when he started dating and eventually married Queen B, Beyoncé. Since they started dating in 2001, their love story was tabloid fodder and you couldn’t go to any supermarket or doctor’s office without seeing their happy and beautiful faces gracing the magazine covers. They were seen pretty much everywhere; at each other’s concerts, basketball games, awards shows, red carpet events, etc. Everywhere they went as a couple, everyone would go crazy seeing them.
Their celebrity couple status would heighten when the two got married in 2008 and they became the ultimate power couple in music and still are to this day. Their marriage definitely cemented their fame by bringing in both their fan bases into the fold of their career on-goings. They also would collaborate frequently on each other’s music, thus making it impossible to fall in love with them or notice them as a couple, especially if you were a fan of one or both of them.
When Blue Ivy made her diva debut in 2012, the attention on the couple once again was revived as everyone wanted to see the royal music couple with their new daughter. Images of Beyoncé posing with Blue Ivy were always done in high-fashion style so everyone knew that she was destined for greatness, just like her parents. Her twins, Rumi and Sir, followed not long after and the world has been consistently in love with the family ever since.
However, it seems things were not as perfect as they seemed in the Knowles-Carter clan when rumors of Jay-Z’s cheating started as whispers and then turned to full-on rumors. The timeline of how this all went down is interesting and shocking as no one in their right mind would ever cheat on the Queen herself. We did some digging to see exactly who this other woman is and how she inspired Beyoncé to write one of the greatest albums of the 21st century.
When the Rumors Started
Also known as the “elevator incident”, in 2014 a video surfaced from that year’s Met Gala showing Beyoncé, her sister Solange and Jay-Z involved in a dispute on an elevator. In the video, Solage is shown hitting and shouting at Jay-Z, while Beyoncé looks on and does nothing to stop the incident. Since the video had no sound, no one knows exactly what Solange is saying to Jay-Z or if they said anything to her.
Because of Solange only seemingly attacking Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s indifferent attitude, rumors started to circulate that maybe Solange was attacking Jay-Z about rumors circulating around the industry that he was cheating on Beyoncé and that Beyoncé didn’t react because she was letting Solange give it to him. However, no statement has been released from the trio’s individual camps and they eventually posted a group statement saying they were having family issues, but it was nothing and that they all have worked past it and moved on. Since that statement was released, nothing else has been said by anyone about Jay-Z cheating. Well, not in their music, anyway.
The Sweet and Bitter Truth of Lemonade
In 2016, Beyoncé came clean about the rumors in the most Beyoncé way ever; through her music. She dished all the dirt on her marriage with her critically acclaimed and visual album, Lemonade. Her new album was not only a shock musically to her fans as it showed a more lyrically intense Beyoncé and experimentation of different musical genres but also because the album was a truth bomb about Jay-Z’s infidelity. Lemonade even went as far as detailing exactly how they went through dealing with his cheating as a couple by titling each of her album’s video chapter tracks as “Intuition”, “Denial”, “Anger”, “Apathy”, “Emptiness”, “Accountability”, “Reformation”, “Forgiveness”, “Resurrection”, “Hope”, and “Redemption”. This album definitely proved Jay-Z was unfaithful and fans were excited and shocked to have proof.
“Becky With the Good Hair”
After Lemonade dropped and revealed Jay-Z’s infidelities, questions started rising about who exactly would Jay-Z cheat on Beyoncé with? The internet was on fire with speculations about who it could be since Beyoncé didn’t name specific names in the album. However, eagle-eyed fans turned to her lyrics to see if they could find clues or hidden messages in the music. This is when the mystery of “Becky with the good hair” developed and has had fans yearning to know if this was “the other woman”.
”Becky with the good hair” was a lyric from the track “Sorry” and for context, the full lyric is “He only want me when I’m not there / He better call Becky with the good hair”. The BeyHive took this lyric, ran with it and started naming names to call Jay-Z and the supposed adulteress out. Fans did some intense internet sleuthing and some theories included Rachel Roy, a fashion designer who worked with Jay-Z on a clothing line and supposedly was who Solange was yelling at Jay-Z about in the elevator incident. Rachel didn’t do any favors when after the album dropped, she posted an Instagram post stating “Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. Live in the light #nodramaqueens”. Fans took this as proof that Rachel was Becky and started posting angry comments and lemon and bee emojis on her post. Rachel eventually made her Instagram private. However, whether Rachel is the real Becky, remains to be confirmed.
Another suspect the BeyHive investigated was Rita Ora, who enticed the Becky Witch Hunt when she posted a pic on Instagram of her wearing a bra with lemons on it paired with a necklace that had the letter “j” on it. Fans immediately went in on Rita and she was only spared with Queen B herself snapchatted with her at the Met Gala. Another thing that finally cleared Rachel and Rita’s name and ended the Becky theory once and for all, is when one of the co-writers of “Sorry” came forward and stated there was no real Becky and that the Becky in the song was just a general name used for a side chick. Fans were then left to look for and use other clues to sniff out this unnamed woman.
So, Who Did Jay-Z Cheat With?
It’s definitely been confirmed by Jay-Z that he cheated on Beyoncé. Both have also confirmed that they are working on it and want to grow and heal from the situation. This is clearly evident as Jay-Z and Beyoncé are still together this day. But, do we know who exactly Jay-Z cheated with? After Lemonade, Jay-Z followed up with his own tell-tale album 4:44, where he goes on to admit the cheating did happen but did HE name names?
The answer is no. Jay-Z has not named names either so the other woman will remain a mystery until the couple or Becky herself decides to fess up. However, we highly doubt that will happen, because if the BeyHive gets wind of this, they definitely make sure that justice is served for their Queen B. So, to whoever Becky is, maybe it’s best if you take that secret to the grave, as much as we would all love to know who you are.
