At the moment, Shawn Mendes and his lady love Camila Cabello are still together – but are “taking time apart.” What happened?
Quarantine
After spending much of 219 together both in and out of the public eye, the two quarantined together in Camila’s Miami home for several months. It may not be as dramatic as quarantine led to them hating one another – but Shawn decided to come back to Los Angeles. According to a source speaking to In Touch The [original plan] was that Camila would go back to Los Angeles with him,” says the insider. “But they decided they needed to take a break from each other.”
Despite being inseparable since they went public – the couple decided to take a break from each other.
“Despite their busy careers, they’ve spent much of the past year together. They were in love and were best friends — they still are,” says the source. “The past year was a whirlwind for them and they supported each other so much. Nothing really went bad between them, they just realized they need some time apart.”
According to the same insider – the couple are each respectively working on new albums and needed time and space to grow individually as artists. Although it is difficult, they two are not cold-shouldering one another and are continuing to talk regularly.
To help calm the fears of fans – they both still follow one another on Instagram and have not deleted their sweet posts about one another from their feeds.
Real Love or Marketing?
The couple initially met on tour way back in 2014 – with Cabello being a part of Fifth Harmony, which opened for Austin Mahone along with Mendes. When asked about their thoughts on each other upon first impression, Cabello remembered Mendes being a bit of a loner who kept to himself and playing his guitar. Mendes laughed and commented that he felt like Cabello was “crazy” – but in a good way, “I’d be looking through the [tour bus] window and I’d see you like, flying around on a scooter and jumping and doing cartwheels. I’d be like, she’s insane.”
They met again opening for Taylor Swift – which is when they wrote and released their initial song together, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Upon speaking to Rolling Stone Mendes said that the creation of the tune was completely spontaneous, “We were just backstage hanging out, I pulled out my guitar and we were just messing around, not really thinking about writing a song,” Cabello added, “I am very lucky that we wrote the song because I also got a really good friendship out of that.”
The press continued to ask uncomfortable and pressing questions about their relationship, insisting that they must absolutely be together (regardless of the fact that Cabello had dated other people throughout this time) – to which they generally responded one or the other “friendzoned” the respective attempts.
After their hit single “Senorita”, the two have been hit with controversy and backlash that their relationship was nothing more than a marketing stunt for record sales. After a year together, the call-outs about the relationship being for publicity have all but stopped now that both have gone relatively silent on their social media.
In an attempted to silence the haters and those in doubt – the couple had an awkward public makeout to confirm their status. In between giggles, the couple gets serious to the critics, “So we saw on Twitter – you guys saying stuff about the way were kissing and how it looks weird like we kiss like fish,” Mendes mentions, referring to critics’ reactions to the two’s PDA displays previously captured by paparazzi.
“Yeah, it really hurt our feelings,” the pair continued: “We just want to show you how we really kiss.” The two go on to engage in a sloppy over the top french kiss, devolving into licking one another’s faces and rubbing their open mouths all over each other.
In a more low key move, photos caught the two sporting their Bond Touch bracelets – fan’s eagle-eyed the cute technology that vibrates as the other paired user touches the bracelet on their end to alert the partner they are missed.
As of now, fans are still holding out hope for the star crossed couple, spying Cabello wearing Mende’s clothes in her August Instagram photos. Fans have also taken to Twitter with suspicions that she had been posting from Los Angeles and to speculate onlookers had seen the two walking together in public. Fans are savagely protecting the sweet cinnamon buns from any sort of dark cloud rumor of their breakup or separation. Let’s hope they are right!
The Next Ex?
While fans hold out hope for the social media darlings, let’s review the list of exes to check for red flags. Except, there is no real list. Mendes has been painfully quiet about his past dating life, with no laundry list of kiss-and-tell lying in his wake.
However, there was a brief stint with Hailey Baldwin while in her on again off again beginnings with now-husband Justin Bieber. Attending Kylie Jenner’s 2017 Halloween party together, the pair were later also spotted cuddling in Toronto in December. After being seen together the previous year – the duo appeared together at the 2019 MET Gala, to which the two officially denied being an item to People – “No, we were not making our big debut. We were both asked to walk by Tommy Hilfiger,” Mendes said.
Baldwin went on to explain that, “I try to keep that side of my life as private as possible. I don’t feel like I have to explain myself to people because it’s my life.” Once she moved past not dating Mendes, she quickly married Bieber.
Once the nuptials took place, Mendes opened up a little about their pairing to Rolling Stone with the revelation that their relationship never had a title, that “it was more of a zone of limbo.”
Mendes was briefly rumored to be dating Chloë Grace Moretz in 2016 – but those suspicions and rumors were never confirmed.
New to Love
During an interview with British GQ – Mendes opened up about his relationship with love, dating, and interpersonal life. He confided that he had been “close” to falling in love before – but had never truly been in what he would call love. He admitted he felt as if that made him a “phony” for writing and singing about love without having truly experienced it – or its subsequent loss. He apparently was not too upset about the limbo with Baldwin because in the same breath he confirmed he had never truly felt heartbreak either.
When further questioned in the interview, he confessed he would absolutely date a fan – expanding further by saying “The truth is, your wife or your girlfriend should be your biggest fan. So, at the end of the day, you should be each other’s biggest fans.”
How very true – and a mature opinion for someone just dipping his toes into the relationship world!
Mendes and Cabello admit to being each other’s number one fan, singing one another’s praises, and uplifting each other via social media.
Here’s hoping their combined fanbase of over 100 million followers are right and that this young love will continue to blossom through a pandemic and two records being produced.
