A petition is currently circulating the internet to replace the current NBA logo with a new logo featuring Kobe Bryant. Courtesy of Change.org, the petition is rapidly exceeding 2 million signatures in just the couple days following the tragic death of the former NBA great, Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, and the seven individuals who were aboard the helicopter when it crashed in Calabasas, California on January 26th, 2020.
The support advocating for the new NBA logo can be seen all over social media from various prominent figures. From NBA veteran Jamal Crawford to Singer/Pop Star Justin Bieber, celebrities and fans are all sharing the sentiment that the great NBA star’s legacy should be solidified by updating the logo with his likeness.

It started as a long shot for the Canadian teen, Nikyar Moghtader, who started the petition stating, “My initial goal was to get a mere 100 signatures.” Clearly this goal was quickly achieved and if it is to be honored, it would mean removing the silhouette of Jerry West from the logo, another Los Angeles Laker. A logo that has been in use for over 50 years.
Jerry West was legendary Laker who played in the 1960s who went on to become the team’s head coach and eventually general manager. West was the engine that powered many memorable Laker seasons and decisions, including the decision to sign Kobe Bryant out of high school in 1996.
There is no doubting the legacy of either of these two individuals, and it may be worth it to note that neither of their legacies should be compared against the other when speaking on this topic. The tragic death of Kobe Bryant put a microscope on how revolutionary of a player he was to the NBA and the lives he impacted in and out of sports.
